‘Reading is like breathing in. Writing is like breathing out.’

All Saints staff are driven by their love of English and demonstrate this through their passionate teaching of the subject in its own right and as the medium for teaching; understanding language provides access to the whole curriculum. The teaching of writing at our school is a ‘skills based’ approach carefully woven into the genres we select for each year group based on our children’s interests and needs. At all levels, there is emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as vocabulary development. It is our vision that every child will learn to write by being given exciting materials and opportunities that will inspire them to pick up their pencils and write: a love we hope lasts a life-time. We foster in our children an understanding that writing has a real purpose in this world and that word choice and style can bring about change.

Both our staff and children understand that reading is an intrinsic way of supporting writing development: reading can aid the acquisition of ideas, vocabulary and sentence structure. We strive for our children to learn to love reading through a plethora of books in our well-resourced libraries, just one part of our reading rich environment. We strongly believe that reading is at the centre for learning and can open many doors for our children.
